Outside Air Temperature Sensors

AcuTEMS OA Overview

How to choose an Outside Air Temperature Sensor?

Outside air temperature sensor designed to measure ambient air temperature outside buildings and facilities using precision sensing elements, including 100Ω Platinum, 1KΩ Platinum, Nickel RTDs, and 10KΩ Type II, Type III, or 20KΩ thermistors. The sensor is installed vertically in a shaded outside location using screw mounting and push-button wiring. An IP65-rated enclosure protects against dust, moisture, and other outdoor elements. With a response time under 10 seconds, the sensor transmits temperature data to Building Automation System controllers to support efficient operation of economizers, heating, and cooling systems, ensuring optimal indoor comfort and reliable HVAC performance.

AcuTEMS OA Applications

Illustration of the Economizer Control feature of the AcuTEMS OA Temperature Sensor.

Economizer Control

AcuTEMS OA works with air handling units (AHU) to enable the economizer function. The sensor accurately monitors the outdoor air temperature and determines whether the system can utilize outdoor air to adjust the indoor temperature instead of conditioned air, reducing energy waste and extending equipment lifespan.

Weather Compensation

Many hydronic systems, such as boilers and water pumps, require close monitoring of outdoor air temperature in order to prevent overheating and overcooling. As the outdoor temperature drops, the BAS controller should increase the water temperature, and as the outdoor temperature rises, the water temperature should decrease accordingly.

HVAC System Optimization

The AcuTEMS OA works with other duct and room temperature sensors to create an optimized, demand-based HVAC system where fans, dampers, heating/cooling coils can be precisely adjusted according to real-time data. This creates an efficient system with reduced energy consumption and improved equipment performance.

AcuTEMS OA FAQs

Can I Install AcuTEMS OA Under Direct Sunlight?

No, AcuTEMS OA is designed to be installed in a shaded location. Direct sunlight will affect the sensor’s performance. If the specific application requires the sensor to be installed under direct sunlight, Accuenergy recommends using the AcuHUM OAW instead, which includes a six-layer weather shield, offering protection against UV radiation.
